The Water Level in the Daugava Begins to Rise

The water level in some rivers of Latvia continues to rise, and in the Daugava it has started to increase more rapidly, reports the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

In Latgale and Selia, as well as in the Daugava basin in Belarus and Russia, there is still a layer of snow 5–28 centimeters thick. The snow has completely melted in Kurzeme, except for the southern regions, and in many places in Vidzeme.

The water level in the rivers of Kurzeme is mostly falling, while in the Barta it remains high.

In recent days, the water level in the Berze at Livberze has dropped by 20 centimeters, and in Tervete at Bramberga it has begun to decrease, while in other areas of the Lielupe basin, the water level continues to rise or fluctuates slightly.

In the rivers of Latgale and Vidzeme, the water level is rising in some places, while in others it is falling or fluctuating. The largest rise since February - 1.7 meters - was recorded in Aiviekste at Lubana, where during the flood of 2010, the water level was more than two meters higher.

Most of the Daugava is covered with ice. In the rivers of Kurzeme, ice has only been preserved in some places.

This week, record high temperatures are expected, and the remaining snow will melt across most of the country, with little precipitation.
