Years go by, reasons for celebration change, yet March 8th remains an unchanged holiday in Latvia. Not official, but popular.
Attempts to give International Women's Day a political coloring have not been successful.
No, there are certainly resilient Latvian ladies who diligently behave on this day just like any other. There are also principled (thrifty?) men who categorically refuse to buy and give flowers.
But such individuals are few, as a survey conducted in early March by the portal bb.lv indicates. More than 2,000 people participated in it.
The vast majority – 74% – answered a firm "Yes" to the question "Do you plan to congratulate / receive congratulations on March 8th?".
Those who do not plan to do so make up only 14%.
And finally, the undecided, waiting to see how things unfold – 12%. One can only wish them to find someone they would like to congratulate or someone who will congratulate them. But enough of the statistics.
