Dozens of Employers in Latvia Unfairly Exploit Ukrainian Refugees

At least several dozen entrepreneurs are unfairly exploiting Ukrainian civilians who fled from the war, public media reports.

Such conclusions were reached by the organization "Shelter 'Safe House'". The State Labor Inspectorate (SLI) also confirms that the number of complaints from third-country nationals, including Ukrainians, is increasing. Complaints concern both non-payment of wages to employees and the absence of an employment contract or other forms of unfair exploitation.

Nikolai arrived in Latvia shortly after the war began, while still a minor. He was looking for work and found it. He worked in a warehouse, where he had to receive and process orders, and pack goods.

"I found a job about a month later. I was hired, but without a contract. I was paid for the first month, but not for the next two. I worked there for three months," the Ukrainian said.

Ukrainian citizens who have received international protection have the right to work in Latvia like any other citizens.

"Ukrainians are indeed trying to work, looking for jobs. But, unfortunately, I have the impression that Latvian employers are very dishonest when hiring Ukrainian citizens," said lawyer of the organization Gita Mirushkina.

Last year, 38 Ukrainians sought help regarding labor law at "Shelter 'Safe House'". The organization helped six Ukrainians prepare lawsuits. For example, an employer forced a cleaner to work 250-400 hours a month. He paid for the minimum number of hours.

"The lawsuit already exceeds 11,000 [euros], and it is currently under consideration in court," Mirushkina said.

Many Ukrainians, feeling grateful for the peaceful sky above them, unconditionally trust their employers. Furthermore, not wanting to live on benefits, they agree to unfair job offers.
