In southern Latgale, the snow cover reaches up to 46 centimeters

The deepest snow in the country remains in the southern part of Latgale, where its depth reaches up to 46 centimeters, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

In Dagda, the snow cover this week increased from 40 to 47 centimeters, while on Sunday it decreased by one centimeter. This is the deepest snow in the country since March 2023.

The second thickest snow cover at the country's observation stations is 41 centimeters in Piedruja, Kraslava region. At the Daugavpils observation station, there are 35 centimeters of snow, while in the Rezekne and Līvāni regions, there are 30 and 32 centimeters, respectively.

At other stations, the snow cover ranges from six centimeters in Daugavgriva and Mersrags to 28 centimeters in Rucava. At the observation station in the center of Riga, the snow cover is 16 centimeters.

In the Daugava basin in Belarus and Russia, the ground is covered with an average snow depth of 40-55 centimeters, so during the spring floods in the Daugava, a high water level is possible.

According to current forecasts, a thaw and snowmelt are possible starting from February 12, and in the second half of February, the snow cover may become thicker.
