This year, 46% of residents of Latvia plan to purchase a car, the LETA agency reported, citing a conducted survey.
Survey data also shows that most buyers prefer used vehicles, while 12% consider purchasing a new car. 8% of respondents plan to acquire an electric vehicle.
Most often, residents aged 30 to 39 plan to buy a car — in this age group, 55% of respondents expressed the intention to purchase a vehicle. At the same time, interest is lowest among those aged 60 to 74 — two-thirds, or 66% of residents, do not plan to buy a car in the near future.
The survey reveals differences in choices across regions: in Riga, the purchase of more environmentally friendly cars is considered relatively more often, with one in five residents, or 20%, planning to acquire a hybrid or electric vehicle. In the regions, however, a more pragmatic approach dominates — preference is given to used gasoline or diesel cars, especially in Kurzeme (32%) and Latgale (29%), as well as in Zemgale and Vidzeme (both regions at 27%), while in Riga, the purchase of a used gasoline or diesel car is considered by 19%.
The survey showed that, overall, residents' decisions are cautious — the desire to maintain mobility is balanced by a careful assessment of personal finances.
The survey was conducted by the research agency "Norstat Latvija" in December 2025 in an online format with more than 1000 residents of Latvia aged 18 to 74.
