Observer of folk signs and weather Vilis Bukshs shared his forecast for what the remaining February will be like.
"If we follow the saying 'as December 1st is, so is winter', then February should have moderate frosts and precipitation levels corresponding to the monthly norm. In turn, August 20th and December 27th herald a precipitation-rich Sreten month (February)... Also, the cones at the tops of the spruces, which could still indicate last summer that winter would be harsher in the second half, reduce the likelihood of a warm February," says Vilis Bukshs.
He notes that the month of snowstorms this year will likely be mostly characterized by light and moderate frosts. Days with temperatures around zero will quickly alternate with frosty days. According to him, in the second half of February, during the new moon (February 17), there may be days with thaws. At the end of February, during the waxing moon (February 24), on sunny days, we may even feel the first hints of spring — when the snow will already smell of spring. But true spring is still far away.
"Overall, February will be close to the long-term average in terms of both precipitation and temperature. The snow cover will not disappear anywhere, and in some places, it may even increase," predicts the natural signs researcher.
