COVID recedes, flu advances: hundreds of residents of Latvia hospitalized, eight have died

Monitoring data from the National Reference Laboratory of Microbiology confirms high influenza activity in Latvia. COVID is also not letting up.

Monitoring data shows that clinically influenza has been diagnosed in 309 patients, reaching an average of 455.8 cases per 100,000 residents, which is 10.7% more than the previous week.

The highest intensity of illness was recorded in the Jekabpils region (930.7 cases per 100,000 residents), Jelgava (814.6 per 100,000), and Jurmala (716.5 per 100,000). As in previous weeks, higher influenza morbidity was observed in children under 14 years old.

The high level of other acute respiratory infections remains. In hospitals, the proportion of patients with severe acute respiratory infections among all hospitalized increased to 5.4% in the 5th week (up from 4.7% the previous week).

235 patients have been hospitalized, of which 14 were placed in intensive care units. Last week, one report of death was received for a patient with confirmed influenza type A infection.

Last week, the proportion of positive tests for COVID-19 decreased compared to the previous week to 4.0% (down from 5.6%). At the same time, the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 increased to 64, and a total of 96 patients with confirmed infection were treated in hospitals.
