Rector of the University of Latvia, economist Gundars Berziņš on the direction our economy should develop.
Economist Gundars Berziņš, in an interview with the program "Brīvības bulvaris" (Boulevard of Freedom) on Latvian Radio, named the main problem of Latvia as the inability to make decisions, strategic decisions. This ultimately led to Latvia lagging behind both Estonia and Lithuania in the economy. "And if we continue in the same spirit, we will not get closer to our neighbors," warned the rector of the University of Latvia.
"We are not lagging behind the Estonians in terms of security or language. We are lagging behind the Estonians in terms of economy and competitiveness," noted G. Berziņš. He urged the use of the economic development experiences of two countries - South Korea and Israel. These are two small countries that have managed to achieve incredible success in the economy despite all external threats.
"What Israel did - by the way, something similar was done by the Lithuanians some time ago - they created very specific support mechanisms through state risk management tools for those who want rapid growth and innovation implementation. It would be difficult to enter them now, but these are very deep financial system tools that were used to develop their own economy. They clearly stated - we invest in research and development to advance our military sector, but as soon as we see an opportunity to commercialize it, we say - we keep this for ourselves, we commercialize this. Any idea. For example, the same 'Waze' that we all use grew out of the Israeli military sector. This is a specific Israeli product that was later bought by 'Google', and these navigation systems and cybersecurity information technology systems were created through the military sector, which was then commercialized," continued the rector of the University of Latvia. He urged not to invent anything and simply transfer the experience of these countries to Latvia - a system combining the military industry and innovations.
