At the turn of the year, frost from -10 to -15 degrees Celsius is expected in most parts of Latvia, and snow is also expected in many places, predicts the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
On the night of Thursday, January 1, it will be cloudy in Latvia, but the sky will occasionally clear. Snow will fall in many places, and in some areas, the snow cover will increase by 2-4 centimeters.
A light wind will blow, and by midnight on the coast, it will come from the west and southwest, strengthening to a moderate breeze.
In most parts of Latvia, the air temperature will drop to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius at night, and in some places, when the sky clears, the temperature may drop a few more degrees. In coastal areas, the minimum air temperature is expected to be between -4 and -9 degrees Celsius.
In Riga, the sky will be mostly cloudy with light snow. In the early hours of the night, the wind will be light, but from midnight, it will strengthen from the west and southwest and become gusty. The air temperature will drop to -5 to -6 degrees Celsius.
On New Year's Day, the sky will be covered with clouds, but in some places in the eastern regions, rays of sunshine will break through.
From mid-day, a vast area of precipitation will cross Latvia from the west — heavy snowfall is expected in the western and central regions, and in some areas, the snow cover will increase by 5-8 centimeters. In the evening, in some coastal areas, the snow will turn into wet snow, and in some places, melting may occur.
Some sections of the roads will be slippery, and visibility during snowfall may decrease to 1-2 kilometers in some areas.
A slow to moderate southwest and south wind will gradually strengthen from the south and southeast, reaching gusts of 15-19 meters per second on the coast, and in the afternoon, it will also become gusty in the western and central regions of the country. The expected air temperature is -3 to -8 degrees Celsius, but in the extreme western regions, the air will warm up to -2 to +3 degrees Celsius.
In Riga, the day will be cloudy. Light snow is expected in the morning, but in the evening, the area of precipitation from the west will reach the capital, resulting in an increase in snow cover by 2-4 centimeters. A light to moderate south and southeast wind will prevail, with gusts of 15-17 meters per second. The air temperature will be between -4 and -5 degrees Celsius.
