In terms of pressure exerted by border violators, the outgoing year has been tense, stated the head of the State Border Guard Guntis Pujats in an interview on the LTV program 'Morning Panorama' on Monday.
According to Pujats, the most difficult months for the border guard were the summer months, while December remains relatively calm - this month approximately 150 border violators have been registered in total, with a significant portion being recorded on one specific day, confirming that the services cannot relax.
This year, the border guard has detained 85 carriers of border violators.
Pujats reiterated that illegal migration at the border with Belarus is instrumentalized, rather than occurring naturally, meaning that changes are only possible if the aggressor countries decide to cease this pressure.
According to Pujats, meteorological balloons with contraband cigarettes, which are sent from Belarus towards Lithuania and Latvia, are now also largely elements of a hybrid attack.
