On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, a total of 56 maximum air temperature records were broken in Latvia, including national records for December 10 and 11, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), reports LETA.
On Tuesday, the highest air temperature was recorded in Bauska — +9.4 degrees. The record for December 9 was broken at seven weather stations.
On Wednesday evening, the thermometer in Riga rose to +9.9 degrees, which is one degree higher than the previous national record of December 10, set in 1964 in Kolka. The local heat record for December 10 was updated at all 25 weather stations.
On Thursday, by 5 a.m., the highest temperature was in Daugavpils — +9.4 degrees. The previous national record for December 11 was +8.6 degrees and was registered in 1944 in Jelgava. The local temperature record for this date was broken at all weather stations except for Skulte.
Since the beginning of the year, 395 temperature records have already been broken in Latvia, which is the highest figure in recent years. In comparison, the number of broken cold records is only nine.
On Thursday morning, overcast weather persists, with no significant precipitation. The air temperature across the country ranges from +6 to +9 degrees.
A moderate west and southwest wind blows with gusts of 6–11 meters per second, reaching up to 14 meters per second along the coast. Air quality is good.
In Riga, it is a cloudy morning with a southwest wind blowing at 3–7 meters per second, and the air temperature is +8 degrees.
The highest air temperature in Europe on December 10 was recorded in Spain and Italy — +20..+21 degrees. The lowest temperature on the night of Thursday was minus 27 degrees in northern Finland.
