This week, meteorological winter has arrived in eastern Latvia, but next week will bring warmer weather, predicts the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Currently, meteorological winter, when the average daily temperature remains below zero for five consecutive days, has arrived at several observation stations in the eastern part of the country - in Alūksne, Dagda, Daugavpils, Rēzekne, and in the central part of the country in Madona and Zosēni.

At the end of the week, cold weather and occasional precipitation are expected in most regions of the country, while the beginning of next week will bring drier and warmer weather.

On Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy, with some clearing in the east during the day. Rain and wet snow are expected in many places at night, and in the morning, a band of rain, snow, and freezing rain will move across the country from the west.

Minimum temperatures at night are expected to be between 0 and +4 degrees, with eastern areas experiencing temperatures below zero; daytime temperatures will remain the same as the previous day. A light to moderate southern and southwestern wind will blow, with gusts of up to 15-18 m/s along the coast.

Although on Sunday most of the sky will be covered with clouds, the sun will shine in some places. Rain, wet snow, and occasional freezing rain are expected at night, while the day will pass without significant precipitation. A light to moderate southern and southeastern wind will blow.

At night, the thermometer will drop to -1 to +3 degrees, but it will be warmer on the Kurzeme coast - from +3 to +6 degrees. Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to be in the same range as on Friday and Saturday.

At the beginning of next week, as the anticyclone strengthens, the weather will become drier and warmer, with light precipitation expected in some areas; temperatures will predominantly be above zero, while at night, thermometers may drop to -1 degree in some places.
