After the rains on Wednesday, the water level in the Barta River in southern Kurzeme is rapidly rising, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC) and the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, reports LETA.
The amount of precipitation in Rucava reached 22 millimeters on Wednesday, and since the beginning of the week — 36 millimeters, which is 44% of the monthly norm. Meanwhile, in some areas of western Lithuania, the amount of precipitation — mainly rain — has already exceeded 60 millimeters this week.
The water level in the Barta River at Daugavpils rose by 60 centimeters last night, and at the Latvian-Lithuanian border, it has increased by about one meter over the past day.
In other rivers of Latvia, the water level is rising more slowly or fluctuating. The water temperature in rivers, lakes, and the sea is mainly between 2 and 7 degrees.
Hydrologists predict that fluctuations will mainly continue in the rivers in the coming days, with a rise in the water level expected in the Daugava. In some smaller bodies of water, initial ice formations will begin to form.
