Snow, Ice, Gusty Winds - Forecasters Discuss Weather Changes

At the beginning of the new working week, colder air from the north will start to flow into Latvia, according to forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The weather will become noticeably cooler not only at night but also during the day, and by the end of the week, in some places, the thermometer will drop to -5° at night.

In the second half of the week, due to low air temperatures, rain will begin to mix with snow in some areas, and the issue of ice formation on roads and sidewalks will become more relevant.

On Monday and Tuesday, the sky will remain overcast, bringing rain, mostly light, to most of the territory both at night and during the day. With light winds at night, fog will form in some places, which may persist during the day in certain areas. During the dark hours, the air will cool to +2…+6 degrees, only in coastal areas will it be a couple of degrees warmer, while daytime temperatures will not exceed +4…+9 degrees.

On Wednesday, although in some places sunlight will break through the clouds, there will be light rain in certain areas, mainly in the west. Throughout the day, the southern and southwestern winds will strengthen, and along the coast, gusts will reach 15 meters per second. Due to a brief influx of warmer air, in some places, the air temperature will rise above +10 degrees.

In the second half of the week, an active cyclone will approach Latvia from the northwest - on Thursday, new precipitation zones will pass over the territory of the country, bringing more intense rains to most areas. At that time, the wind will change direction to the west and northwest, and gusty winds will blow across almost all of Latvia.

From Friday, the influence of the cyclone will weaken, the air temperature will drop, and during the night hours over the weekend, the thermometer will fall below 0 degrees in many places. Although precipitation is expected only in isolated areas at the end of the week, it should be noted that snowflakes will join the rain, and a small layer of snow may form for a short time. Ice formation is expected on certain sections of the roads.
