In the TV24 program 'Press Club', RD (LPV) deputy, barrister, LU professor, and chairman of the board of the Institute of Legal Sciences Ringolds Balodis assessed the current security situation in Latvia and the government’s ability to ensure public confidence in the country’s readiness for defense.
“If we talk about the security situation, then undoubtedly the fact that the Minister of Defense and the Ministry of Defense were unable some time ago to explain how things stand with drones, telling all sorts of nonsense, makes it clear that this drone has slipped out of their attention, which does not contribute to security and confidence,” said Balodis.
He notes that instances of unidentified drones flying over Riga Airport also do not contribute to public trust in the security system. Balodis emphasizes that society is forced to rely solely on faith that progress is indeed being made in the defense sector, as the lack of transparency does not allow for verification in practice.
“I would like to believe that the country’s defense capability is growing because huge amounts of money are being invested in it – limited access and state secrets are paramount. We cannot analyze how and where this money is being spent. We can only believe,” Balodis noted.
Assessing the overall geopolitical situation, Balodis acknowledges that tensions in the world have increased. “If we talk about the overall geopolitical situation, it is certainly hard to imagine anything more horrifying. I think we are indeed somewhere close to World War III. Let’s hope for the common sense of people, because no one can be satisfied with such a war,” the lawyer stated.
