It Happened: Latvia Changed the Clocks According to the 1981 Standard

On the night of Sunday, Latvia transitioned from summer to winter time - at 4 o'clock, the clocks were set back by one hour. Summer time was first introduced in Latvia in 1981.

According to the Ministry of Economics, the transition to summer and winter time in Latvia is regulated by the Cabinet of Ministers' decree of October 26, 2010, "On the Transition to Summer Time." In turn, in the European Union (EU), the procedure for transitioning to summer time is defined by the directive of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU dated January 19, 2001, which establishes the start and end of summer time uniformly for all EU member states.

As noted by the Ministry of Economics, although the issue of abolishing the time change has been discussed at the EU level, no unanimous decision has been made, as many countries believe that a complete impact assessment on costs and other aspects is necessary for the abolition of the time change.

The transition to summer time will occur on March 29, 2026, at three o'clock, with the clocks needing to be set forward by one hour.

Summer time was first introduced in Latvia in 1981.
