It is better not to drink tap water in Riga next week

From Monday, October 27, to October 30, preventive disinfection (chlorination) of the water supply is planned in Riga, reports the LETA agency, citing the communication department of "Rīgas ūdens".

Chlorination will begin simultaneously at all water supply pumping stations. It is expected that the disinfectant will be evenly distributed throughout the city's water supply network.

Although the disinfection of the water supply poses no health threat, it is recommended to use boiled water for drinking and cooking during the process and for 24 hours after its completion.

For household needs, water can be used without boiling. Water intended for pets, birds, and ornamental fish should be allowed to stand before use. The same is recommended for watering indoor plants.

During disinfection, tap water may acquire an unpleasant smell and a slight taste of chlorine; however, in the amounts used for disinfection, the substance is not harmful or dangerous to health. Specialists from "Rīgas ūdens" will continuously monitor the situation, carefully tracking the concentration of chlorine in the water.

Preventive disinfection of the water supply network is recommended to be carried out twice a year, but no less than once every two years.

The audited revenue of "Rīgas ūdens" last year amounted to 76.336 million euros, which is 0.1% less than in 2023. Due to the revaluation of assets, the company ended the year with a loss of 18.275 million euros compared to a profit in 2023, according to the published data of the enterprise.

"Rīgas ūdens" provides water supply services in Riga and several suburbs — in the municipalities of Ādaži, Ropaži, Mārupes, and Ķekava, as well as offers wastewater collection and treatment services. The sole owner of the company is the Riga City Council.
