As of the end of September, farmers reported to the Rural Support Service (RSS) information about agricultural crops affected by adverse weather conditions over a total area of 87,307 hectares. According to preliminary data, the total damage amounts to €100.124 million, the Ministry of Agriculture reported.
A total of 84,987 hectares of agricultural land were affected by heavy rains, including crops of cereals, oilseeds, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Of these, 6,533 hectares are uncultivated areas. The greatest losses were noted in winter wheat, perennial grasses, oats, peas, and spring wheat crops.
In addition, fruit crops over a total area of 2,320 hectares were affected by spring frosts. The most severely impacted were black currant, apple, bush blueberry, sea buckthorn, and pear plantings.
The Ministry of Agriculture urges farmers affected by adverse weather conditions to continue submitting data on damaged crop areas to the Rural Support Service (RSS).
The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that each report from farmers is important for an objective assessment of the situation in all affected sectors. The agency reminds that applications for damage compensation can be submitted through the electronic RSS system or via the mobile application.
As reported, on August 5, during an extraordinary meeting in the form of a survey, the government decided to declare a state of emergency in agriculture throughout Latvia until November 4, 2025, to compensate for damage from the consequences of frosts, rains, and floods.
