An elderly couple from the Omsk region had lived together for nearly half a century: side by side they shared daily life, habits, and even health problems — and were about to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. But instead of a celebration, tragedy struck: a 72-year-old man killed his 69-year-old wife with a kitchen knife during an argument over sliced lard.
An evening that changed everything
As reported by Russian media, in May 2026, a couple was sitting on the veranda of their private rural home: they decided to have a snack and drink. The wife asked for some lard, the husband went to get it, brought it back, and handed her a knife: "You cut it." She started cutting, but he didn't like the thickness of the slices. She handed the knife back to him. Then she thought he was cutting too thick, and asked him to make it thinner, which made him angry. Words were exchanged — the conflict escalated.
According to a source, at some point, the man struck his wife in the face — she ended up with a broken nose. Then, with the same kitchen knife he used to cut the lard, he inflicted several slashing wounds to her neck. A fork was found nearby, stained with blood: experts do not rule out that it could have also been used to inflict superficial injuries, but this could not be proven. The woman was bleeding profusely, and the husband, by his own account, did not immediately realize the scale of what had happened and does not remember what happened afterward. When he sobered up, he saw his wife’s lifeless body and went to his daughter, confessing: "I killed her."
An ordinary family
Neighbors and acquaintances unanimously say that the couple did not seem conflictual. 49 years of married life is a long time, enough for even the most different characters to get used to each other. The man was not a marginal: an ordinary grandfather, calm, without a reputation for being a troublemaker.
In recent years, the woman had difficulty moving, and this domestic vulnerability made her defenseless. The pensioner died from blood loss.
Investigation, trial, and sentence
The Investigative Committee gathered sufficient evidence for a conviction. The man's actions were classified under part 1 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder). The court took into account all the circumstances of the case, including his state of intoxication and the absence of premeditation. The pensioner was sentenced to 8 years in a high-security penal colony.
