A joint supplement that has long been considered safe has come under intense scrutiny following a study by American scientists.

A popular dietary supplement that millions of people take to alleviate joint problems and protect cartilage has come under close scrutiny from researchers. This concerns glucosamine – a substance that has long been considered harmless.

As reported by the Hungarian publication HVG, a new American study has revealed a mechanism in brain metabolism that may be linked to the accelerated development of dementia. Researchers particularly focused on individuals who have already shown early signs of cognitive decline.

What the Study Showed

The study was conducted by a group of scientists from the University of Florida. Its results were published in the journal Nature Metabolism. According to the researchers, the consumption of glucosamine may be associated with a faster progression of Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, individuals suffering from this disease showed an increased risk of death.

Glucosamine is widely used to alleviate joint problems and maintain cartilage. It is especially commonly taken by elderly individuals, for whom musculoskeletal issues are becoming increasingly prevalent.

At the same time, the new results have drawn attention to the potential risks of taking the supplement for people who have already begun to experience cognitive decline. Researchers link this to mechanisms of brain metabolism that may influence the course of dementia.
