The eruption of Mount Etna on Monday disrupted operations at the airport in the city of Catania on the Italian island of Sicily.
At Catania Airport – the main airport on the island of Sicily – the reception and dispatch of flights were suspended on Monday due to the activity of Mount Etna at least until 6 PM local time.
Airlines advised passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport. Several dozen flights were redirected to Palermo.
On the morning of July 6, an aviation alert warned that a strong ash eruption continues at Etna, with the ash cloud height potentially reaching 4,500 meters.
Catania Airport, located 45 km from Etna, regularly suffers from its proximity to the most active volcano in Europe. Most popular European airlines, such as KLM, Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, and Lufthansa, operate flights from Catania.
It is worth noting that Lufthansa owns 10 percent of the shares of the Latvian national airline airBaltic.
