Moderation can be safe, but large amounts of alcohol consistently harm.
Interest in the topic did not arise by chance. Women around the world are increasingly interested in wine and are more often collecting it. They also want to understand whether this drink can affect not only taste preferences but also the quality of intimate life. In particular, bold statements emerged after an Italian study.
Researchers tracked how regular moderate consumption of red wine affects women's well-being. Additionally, they compared the effect with other types of alcohol, reports psychologytoday.com. Thus, the researchers aimed to understand whether there is a unique effect specifically from red wine.
The study was based on data from 798 women from the Chianti region in Tuscany. Women who drank one to two glasses of red wine a day reported a higher level of sexual desire. Furthermore, they noted better lubrication and an overall increase in sexual function. Consequently, the researchers suggested that polyphenols and flavonoids—natural compounds capable of improving blood circulation—play a certain role.
Although the results generated significant interest, the researchers immediately warned of important shortcomings. First, participants filled out the questionnaires themselves, which may reduce data accuracy. Second, the sample size was small and pertained only to one region. Third, the specialists did not conduct medical measurements or check physiological responses.
Subsequently, a meta-analysis was published that covered more than 50,000 women. Scientists found that regular and especially excessive alcohol consumption significantly increases the risk of sexual disorders. For example, the likelihood of problems rises by about 74%. In particular, women's arousal decreases, lubrication worsens, pain increases, and achieving orgasm becomes more difficult.
As a result, scientists made a clear conclusion: the dose is crucial. Moderation can be safe, but large amounts of alcohol consistently harm intimate health.
Modern science increasingly views alcohol as a risk factor, especially with regular consumption of large doses. Therefore, it is important for specialists to emphasize: a maximum of one to two glasses is the upper limit of moderation. Exceeding this can have the opposite effect.
Red wine can indeed create an atmosphere and help relieve tension. However, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence that it improves sexual life. It is important to understand: intimacy depends on many factors, and communication sometimes provides more than drinks. Therefore, specialists advise treating wine as a pleasure rather than a means to alter sexual function.
