Poor sleep quality can lead to persistent hypertension.

Nephrologist Svetlana Li named four unobvious causes of hypertension development. According to her, high blood pressure can arise from poor sleep quality. "Sleep problems and its poor quality can be triggered by sleep apnea — a condition where a person's breathing temporarily stops during sleep. As a result, the brain, lacking oxygen, activates adaptive mechanisms that eventually lead to persistent hypertension," the doctor explained.

The second unobvious cause of high blood pressure Li mentioned is kidney problems. According to her, if blood pressure rises more frequently at night and in the early morning, it may indicate that the kidneys are actively regulating water-salt balance during this time and are struggling with this task.

Another cause of hypertension may be the intake of certain medications. The doctor explained that such a side effect can occur due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers, hormonal contraceptives, vasoconstrictive nasal drops, and dietary supplements containing licorice or ginseng.

Finally, an excessive amount of salty products, such as cheese, sausages, ready-made breakfasts, sauces, store-bought semi-finished products, canned goods, and sweet pastries, can lead to increased blood pressure. As the nephrologist explained, the abuse of such products creates an increased load on the blood vessels, which over time can lead to hypertension.
