Sleep specialist: weekend insomnia increases the risk of heart diseases.

Sleep doctor Maxim Novikov explained the dangers of what is known as weekend insomnia.

Novikov clarified that weekend insomnia refers to difficulties in falling asleep or maintaining sleep that predominantly occur on non-working days. It is often associated with a sharp change in sleep and wakefulness patterns, where a person adheres to a strict schedule during the week but goes to bed later and sleeps longer on weekends. This habit, according to the sleep specialist, disrupts circadian rhythms and leads to difficulties in falling asleep on Saturday or Sunday evenings.

"Chronic lack of quality sleep on weekends leads to cognitive decline, mood deterioration, and an increased risk of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. People predisposed to affective disorders are particularly vulnerable: for them, sleep disturbances can trigger depressive or anxious episodes," the specialist warned.

He added that clinically, weekend insomnia manifests as difficulties in falling asleep, frequent awakenings, early rising, morning fatigue, irritability, and anxiety. Despite spending more time in bed, the subjective feeling of rest is absent.
