The duration and type of obesity influence the increased risk of oncological diseases.

Experts have identified an ambiguous relationship between obesity and oncological diseases. The highest risk of cancer development was found in people with obesity that persists for more than 10 years, especially when combined with metabolic syndrome and poorly controlled metabolic disorders.

Observations showed that the type of excess weight is more significant than excess weight itself. Gynoid obesity (the 'female' type) is not associated with high risks, whereas abdominal obesity — characterized by fat accumulation in the abdominal area — is more often accompanied by cardiovascular, metabolic, and oncological problems. An increased risk was also identified in patients with sarcopenic obesity, where excess fat is combined with loss of muscle mass.

Researchers note that the likelihood of oncological diseases sharply increases if abdominal obesity lasts for more than 10 years and is combined with at least two components of metabolic syndrome — for example, hypertension and disturbances in carbohydrate or lipid metabolism. At the same time, patients with overweight or first-degree obesity, but without treatment, develop cancer more frequently than those with more pronounced obesity who regularly take medications and monitor their health indicators.

According to specialists, successful treatment of diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic conditions can reduce oncological risks. Patients with prolonged abdominal obesity and lack of control over blood pressure, sugar levels, and cholesterol should be considered a priority group for in-depth medical monitoring.
