Chicken broth does not cure a cold, but it may speed up recovery, says general practitioner Sabina Donnay. She assessed the soup's effectiveness for medicinal purposes in a conversation with the Daily Mail.
The doctor noted that during illness, it is important to drink plenty of fluids and eat simple foods. Chicken broth perfectly meets these requirements as it replenishes the body's fluid and electrolyte reserves. Additionally, if herbs, celery, carrots, and garlic are added, the soup will provide the body with protein, vitamins, and beneficial amino acids. "For example, the amino acid cysteine is similar to a substance used in medicine to thin mucus and support immunity, while glycine has anti-inflammatory effects," Donnay explained.
The specialist also pointed out that a bowl of warm broth can soothe a sore throat and relieve nasal congestion. Moreover, the soup is easily digestible and provides energy without overloading the digestive system.
