A film where Russians drunkenly argue and ruin relationships on New Year's Eve has been praised in Britain.
The late Soviet comedy "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!" has made it to the list of the best New Year films in the United Kingdom. The ranking was compiled by the British newspaper The Guardian.
Film critic Phil Hoad emphasized that the selection included the original film by Eldar Ryazanov, rather than the modern American remake "About Fate" by Marius Weisberg. According to the expert, many people now find it difficult to remember the romantic comedy from 2022, but the 1976 film "The Irony of Fate," on which it is based, is remembered and loved by almost all residents of the post-Soviet space.
Hoad noted that the love story in this film is full of awkward and funny twists, and the characters, while intoxicated, repeatedly plunge into characteristic Slavic melancholy, take up a guitar, and perform one of the well-known songs by composer Mikael Tariverdiev.
The Guardian's list of films to watch during the New Year holidays also includes "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard" by Billy Wilder, the horror film "The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick, the disaster film "The Poseidon Adventure," the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days," Woody Allen's "Radio Days," the romantic comedy "Holiday," the French film La bonne année, Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread," and "When Harry Met Sally..." by Rob Reiner.
Previously, singer Lyubov Uspenskaya admitted that she considers the songs from the film "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!" to be depressing.
