Normal blood sugar levels in prediabetes reduce the risks of heart diseases.

People with prediabetes who managed to return their blood sugar levels to a normal range were significantly less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases and to be hospitalized for heart failure. This was shown by an analysis of data from two large long-term studies in the USA and China, published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology (LDE).

Researchers observed participants for 20–30 years and compared those whose prediabetes went into remission with those whose sugar levels remained elevated. In the group with normalized glucose levels, the risk of cardiovascular death or hospitalization due to heart failure was approximately 50-60 percent lower, and the risk of heart attack and stroke also significantly decreased.

Remission of prediabetes was determined by several indicators, including HbA1c — a test that reflects the average blood sugar level over the past 2–3 months. The authors emphasize that while a healthy lifestyle is important in itself, the return of sugar to normal values may play a key role in long-term heart protection, complementing standard preventive measures.
