Psychologist: a deep breath before responding to a partner can help avoid arguments.
Psychologist and relationship coach Teresa Maortua stated that couples often argue before the New Year because their daily routine changes, there is almost no personal space left, and there are more obligations and heightened expectations. In an interview with Hola, she suggested ways for partners to avoid pre-holiday quarrels.
"The first thing to do is to reduce emotional reactivity. Before responding to a partner's complaint, pause, take a deep breath, or change rooms for a minute," noted the psychologist.
Secondly, she advised not to make any assumptions during arguments and not to interpret a partner's words in one's own way. Instead, it is necessary to directly ask the person what they want to say. This technique will help avoid misunderstandings, the specialist explained.
"Communicate confidently, speaking from your own perspective. Phrases that express needs rather than attacks are calming," the psychologist provided another recommendation. In conclusion, she urged to show empathy and not to bring up old grievances during arguments.
