An Unexpected Cause of Hypertension Identified

Hypertension: chronic pain increases the risk of developing hypertension.

Chronic pain can significantly increase the risk of developing hypertension — and the more extensive the pain, the higher the likelihood of blood pressure problems. This conclusion was reached by researchers whose work was published in Hypertension.

Analysis of data from over 200,000 adults showed that individuals with persistent pain had a 75 percent higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to those who did not experience pain.

The scientists note that depression plays an important role here: chronic pain increases the likelihood of developing depression, and depression, in turn, raises the risk of hypertension. This means that early diagnosis of emotional disorders in patients with pain syndromes may help prevent the development of cardiovascular complications.

The authors of the study emphasize that chronic pain is not just a local problem, but a factor that affects the entire body. Therefore, specialists should consider the increased risks and closely monitor the condition of patients.
