Abuse of convenience foods increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Abuse of convenience foods, sausages, and sauces can potentially increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes due to the high salt content in these products, warned gastroenterologist Irina Yakovleva.
"The more salt, the higher the risk of hypertension, and this is a direct path to heart attack and stroke," the doctor explained. "Most of the salt comes not from the salt shaker, but from sausages, cheeses, sauces, fast food, and convenience foods. Therefore, one should eat fewer industrially processed products and cook at home more often."
Sugar, according to Yakovleva, can be no less dangerous — an excess of sweets and sugary drinks leads to weight gain, increased triglycerides, and a risk of developing diabetes — all of which affect the heart.
"Sodas, energy drinks, sweet yogurts, packaged juices, cookies, candies — these are not poison, but they should be kept in the 'rarely and in small amounts' category, rather than in daily habits," the gastroenterologist clarified. "If we talk about the packaging and composition of ready-made products, the shorter and clearer the list of ingredients, the better. A product with more than 20 items in its composition cannot be healthy by definition."
