The Serbian director believes that Sean Baker's film lacks the depth and internal drama necessary for acclaimed cinema.
Twice winner of the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or, Emir Kusturica stated that the victory of Sean Baker's film 'Anora', recognized as the main triumph at Cannes in 2024 and winning an Oscar in 2025, is a misunderstanding.
According to the director, the film about the relationship between a wealthy young man and a woman of easy virtue lacks internal conflict and moral dimension, making it insufficiently significant for global recognition.
"Anora is a mistake, it’s the first bad film I’ve seen among the winners of the Cannes Festival," Kusturica noted.
He also emphasized that modern cinema often loses authenticity of emotions, focusing on visual effects and scandalous themes, forgetting about spiritual and psychological depth.
Despite his criticism of the film, Kusturica acknowledged the talent of Russian actor Yura Borisov, who played a supporting role in 'Anora', and plans to invite him to his new project.
