Doctor: the effect of walking depends on the speed of movement. But in any case, walking and moving will be more beneficial for health than sitting at home.

The effect that walking has on the body depends not only on the number of steps but also on the speed of movement, said general practitioner Hussein Ahmad. He named the main condition for benefiting from a walk in an interview with HuffPost.

According to Ahmad, to achieve a positive effect, one should walk five times a week for 30 minutes. A longer walk may be useless if done slowly or at a leisurely pace. "Ideally, the pace should be fast enough for the body to warm up and for breathing to become heavier, while still being able to maintain a conversation," the doctor explained.

The specialist noted that brisk walking reduces the risk of premature death by 20 percent, and the positive effect will still be present even if the walking time is reduced to 11 minutes.
