Why Men Are More Likely to Leave Sick Wives: Study Shocks Psychologists

The promise to be there "in sickness and in health" sounds beautiful — but, as studies have shown, not everyone is ready to fulfill it. Scientists have found that men are six times more likely to file for divorce if their wife faces a serious illness than vice versa.

When a Wife Falls Ill — Family at Risk

According to a study published in Awareness Act, the likelihood of divorce sharply increases when a woman is diagnosed with conditions such as cancer or multiple sclerosis. In contrast, women are more likely to stay by the side of sick husbands and become their primary support.

Experts explain this by stating that women traditionally take on the emotional and domestic aspects of relationships — care, attention, communication. When illness robs them of the strength to fulfill this role, men find themselves unprepared to take on the responsibility.

"Women do an enormous amount of work to maintain relationships. When they fall ill, this system collapses — and for many men, it is easier to leave than to restructure the familiar model," the authors of the study note.

What Helps Maintain Relationships

Psychologists are convinced: a partner's illness is a test for both. If you truly love someone, it is important not to distance yourself, but to create a support system — involving friends, relatives, and specialists.

"In such moments, your partner needs not only medication but also the feeling that they are not left alone," specialists emphasize.

Love is tested not by words, but by actions — especially when life suddenly becomes more complicated.
