The new Prime Minister's bag has become a hit in Japan: the manufacturer cannot keep up with orders

The bag carried by Japan's first female Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi has become a hit, triggering a surge of orders for the manufacturer.

Social media users have identified the bag that Takaiichi carries as the Grace Delight Tote produced by Hamano Inc. This company has been operating in Nagano, central Japan, for 145 years. Hamano products have long been popular among members of the Japanese imperial family.

The Grace Delight shopper, priced at 136,000 yen ($895), is made entirely of leather, weighs only 700 grams, and is designed to "achieve a balance between elegance and practicality," according to Hamano's website.

It is also noted that the company is receiving "a huge number of orders" after "photos of the 104th Prime Minister with one of our bags were published on various social media and news sites, including foreign ones."

"We are currently receiving orders equivalent to six months of production. In this regard, we plan to start shipping at the end of April. We apologize for any delays in responding to inquiries and other questions," Hamano stated.

According to information on the company's website, only a few bags of this model in black are left for sale. All others have been sold out.

The 64-year-old Takaiichi is known as a fan of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was famous for her handbags from the British brand Launer.

In addition to the bag from the local manufacturer, Takaiichi often wears clothing from the Japanese brand Jun Ashida, said Kaori Nakano, a luxury and culture specialist and visiting professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo.

"By wearing clothes from Japanese designers and a bag made in Japan, she demonstrates her patriotism and support for Japanese industry. And it is already working," Nakano added.
