Doctor: there is currently no scientific evidence linking bra-wearing and cancer.
The claim that rigid and synthetic bras provoke breast cancer is a myth, assured oncologist-mammologist Elena Zhukova, head of the primary oncology office for breast disease treatment.
According to the doctor, the myth that tight bras provoke cancer emerged in the 1990s. At that time, it was believed that rigid cups and underwires constrict lymphatic vessels and hinder the removal of toxins.
However, as the specialist emphasized, there is currently no scientific evidence that wearing a bra increases the risk of breast cancer. She also cited the results of a large-scale study showing that neither the type of underwear (with or without underwires), its density, nor the duration of wear affects the risk of developing oncological diseases.
Moreover, it is known that tissue pressure does not affect the functioning of the breast's lymphatic system and does not disrupt lymph drainage, the doctor clarified. "Wearing a bra is a matter of comfort and support, not cancer prevention. It is much more important for the underwear to fit properly and not cause skin irritation or pain," added Zhukova.
