An unpleasant smell from the mouth may indicate serious health problems, warned gastroenterologist Veronika Kornilova.
According to Kornilova, the smell of acetone from the mouth may appear in decompensated diabetes when a person grossly violates the prescribed diet or incorrectly calculates insulin units. In people without diabetes, a similar smell may arise due to a strict low-carbohydrate diet or severe intoxication triggered by an infectious disease. In this case, the unpleasant odor is accompanied by a temperature above 38 degrees, the doctor clarified.
A rotten or sour smell may occur due to gastritis with low acidity or reflux. For those who have noticed this symptom, Kornilova recommended consulting a gastroenterologist. She noted that some people also experience a smell of urine or feces from the mouth: the former may be a symptom of kidney problems, while the latter indicates intestinal obstruction.
The doctor added that the smell of fish or baked apples from the mouth may signal advanced liver diseases. According to the doctor, this symptom should particularly alert people with obesity, viral hepatitis, as well as those who abuse alcohol or take a large number of medications.
