Nutrients: low calcium intake reduces cardiopulmonary endurance.

Scientists from Laval University (Canada) have discovered that low calcium intake may reduce cardiopulmonary endurance — the body's ability to absorb oxygen during physical exertion. The study, published in Nutrients, showed that individuals who consume less calcium have significantly poorer aerobic fitness and heart and lung performance, especially among men.

The study involved 576 adults, whose calcium intake, body composition, and physical activity were assessed. The analysis revealed that those who received more calcium from their diet not only had better endurance but also a higher percentage of muscle mass with less fat.

The authors note that calcium plays a key role in muscle function, temperature regulation, and energy metabolism, so its deficiency can directly impact physical fitness. Scientists plan to investigate how exactly this mineral affects the body's aerobic capacity and whether athletic performance can be improved through dietary adjustments.
