Director John Watts, who directed three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland, may lead a new major project in the Star Wars universe. He is expected to be entrusted with the first film of the new trilogy, which is anticipated to continue the story after the events of the film "The Rise of Skywalker."
The script for the new film is being written by Simon Kinberg. Initially, the information about Watts' involvement was spread by Knight Edge Media, which was later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
It is expected that the film will be a continuation of the main saga about the Skywalkers and effectively the tenth episode of Star Wars.
Rey May Return
According to media reports, Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey. However, her participation in the first film of the new trilogy is likely to be limited.
At the same time, the fate of the previously announced standalone film about Rey remains uncertain. Knight Edge Media claims that the project "New Jedi Order" is currently on hold.
A final decision on launching the new trilogy has not yet been made. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has not yet received official approval from Disney. Lucasfilm has not commented on the appointment of Watts.
If the studio's plans do not change, filming for the first film could begin as early as 2027.
Watts Has Worked with Star Wars Before
For John Watts, the Star Wars universe is not new. Together with Christopher Ford, he created the series "Star Wars: The Bad Batch," and he personally directed two of its episodes.
The director gained the most fame from the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland. Additionally, Watts directed the horror film "Clown," the thriller "Cop Car," and the action-comedy "The Lone Wolves" featuring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
Meanwhile, the next feature film in the franchise will be "Starfighter" by Shawn Levy. Ryan Gosling stars in it, and the premiere is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
Thus, Lucasfilm may be preparing not just another spin-off, but a full-fledged continuation of the main Star Wars story. However, whether the new film will officially be the tenth episode of the saga will be definitively known after the project is approved by the studio.
