В Португалии появился первый «терапевтический лес»

Portugal has opened its first officially recognized therapeutic forest — a natural area created specifically for restoring health and emotional balance. The project is based on the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, more commonly known as 'forest bathing,' the effectiveness of which is supported by numerous scientific studies.

According to specialists, regular time spent in the forest helps reduce stress levels, normalize blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, and decrease manifestations of anxiety. The project authors aimed to make this form of wellness accessible to everyone by transforming a regular forest area into a space for mindful relaxation.

The main feature of the new zone is a specially equipped route. Unlike typical tourist trails, everything here is designed for leisurely walks and complete immersion in the atmosphere of nature. The area has been improved, with benches installed for rest and meditation, and the paths made convenient for elderly people and visitors with limited mobility.

Visitors can explore the forest independently or as part of special groups led by certified instructors. They help participants disconnect from gadgets, focus on the sounds of the forest, the scents of the trees, and their own sensations, turning an ordinary walk into a unique session of nature therapy.

Municipal authorities hope that the new forest will become not only a popular recreational spot but also part of a preventive medicine system. In the future, doctors may recommend such walks to patients as a supplement to traditional treatment. Interest in the initiative has already been shown by other regions of the country, which are also considering the possibility of creating similar natural zones.

...Modern medicine is increasingly recognizing the power of nature. The Portuguese therapeutic forest is yet another example of how a walk among trees can become not just a pleasant pastime but an important element of health care and quality of life.
