Elephants can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, but their legs move almost the same way as when walking. These animals never switch to a gallop — a form of running where all four legs are off the ground simultaneously. Even at their fastest, only two legs leave the ground at the same time.
This is partly due to anatomical features: an elephant's elbows bend forward, like knees.
The main reason lies in their enormous weight: the bones and ligaments of the joints would not withstand the overloads during push-off and landing. For this reason, elephants never jump.
