There is an opinion that during the winter period, waste for composting can be preserved at home. How to do this?
This question is answered by biologist Ivan Russkikh:
- There is a method for preserving kitchen waste that resembles the process of fermenting cabbage. To do this, you need to fill containers with kitchen waste (mainly of plant origin) and pour over them a solution consisting of 1 liter of water, 1 tablespoon of honey (artificial can be used), and 1 tablespoon of cabbage or cucumber brine (not pickle!).
After that, the container is closed and left in a cool place for lactic acid fermentation. New portions of waste can be added to the already fermented ones. The success of this method entirely depends on the quality of the waste — they must be fresh and free of signs of spoilage. It is also important to create suitable conditions for fermentation; otherwise, the system may start to emit an unpleasant odor.
