When oil or fat catches fire in the kitchen, water should not be used — this can lead to an instant spread of flames. Experts also explained which fire extinguishers are suitable for home use and how to act in case of a small fire.

Using water to extinguish burning oil or fat can lead to a rapid spread of fire and a quick loss of control over the blaze, warn fire safety specialists.

According to Estonian fire safety expert Siim Sisk, the best option for such cases is a Class F fire extinguisher, specifically designed for extinguishing burning oils and fats.

He noted that a regular powder fire extinguisher does not cool the ignition source, so the fat can reignite. A special Class F extinguisher reduces the risk of re-ignition and is considered a safer alternative to a fire blanket.

Safety expert Tuuli Taavet explained that a Class ABC powder extinguisher is suitable for most homes, as it is designed to extinguish various household materials. However, after its use, the powder can damage household appliances and electronics.

If there is a lot of electronics in the house, specialists recommend using a carbon dioxide extinguisher, which is suitable for extinguishing electrical appliances and live wiring. After using it, the room needs to be ventilated, as carbon dioxide reduces oxygen concentration.

A foam extinguisher is suitable for extinguishing wood, paper, textiles, plastic, gasoline, and oil, but it is essential to ensure that the specific model allows for extinguishing electrical equipment under voltage. A water extinguisher is intended for wood, paper, and textiles but is not suitable for extinguishing burning oils and fats.

Experts also recommend keeping a fire blanket in the kitchen. It allows for cutting off the oxygen supply to a small ignition source, such as burning fat in a pan, an appliance, or clothing.

When using a fire blanket, do not lift it to check if the fire is out, as this can lead to re-ignition and burns. If the flame is not extinguished, the blanket should be placed back over the source.

Experts emphasize that a fire extinguisher should only be used when it is safe to do so. If the fire spreads quickly, the room fills with smoke, or there is a risk of becoming trapped, you should immediately leave the premises and call emergency services at 112.

Specialists also remind that a fire extinguisher should be stored in an easily accessible place, regularly checked, and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
