The State Police (VP) has seriously prepared for various possible provocations in connection with the upcoming elections to the 15th Saeima, stated the head of the police, Armands Ruks, in an interview with the Latvian Television program Rīta panorāma.
According to him, the risks during the elections can vary widely — from individual actions of certain people and thoughtless acts to organized attempts from outside to influence the internal political processes in Latvia. As one of the possible risks, Ruks mentioned the sending of threatening emails.
In order for the police to respond appropriately to various possible scenarios, preparations for work during the elections began long before the voting. At the same time, Ruks emphasized that there are currently no obvious signs of potential threats.
Currently, the State Police is operating in an enhanced mode. This operational order will be maintained until the completion of the vote counting, while the police will continuously assess the current situation.
Ruks also reported that in the first four days when voters could cast their votes in advance, no significant incidents were recorded.
Today is the last day for voters to cast their votes in advance for the elections to the 15th Saeima. The elections themselves will take place tomorrow.
