The State Police of Latvia has transferred a criminal case against a 59-year-old man suspected of sexual crimes against five minors to the prosecutor's office. The investigation revealed 18 alleged episodes that occurred in Jelgava over more than 20 years — from March 1994 to January 2015. The suspect is in custody.
Information about possible sexual violence against several minors was received by the Zemgale Regional Department of the State Police on January 6, 2026.
The police immediately initiated a criminal process and operational activities. Soon, the alleged perpetrator — a man born in 1967 — was detained.
On January 8, the court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention. The suspect remains in custody at present.
The investigation revealed 18 episodes
During a large-scale investigation, the police identified 18 alleged episodes of sexual crimes against five minors.
According to the investigation, these occurred between March 1994 and January 2015.
In addition, the police uncovered possible violations of legislation regulating the circulation of pornographic materials.
During a search, law enforcement seized several information carriers. According to the police, they contained photographs and video materials featuring child pornography, as well as images of sexual acts between humans and animals.
The criminal process is classified under several articles of the criminal legislation concerning sexual crimes and the illegal circulation of pornographic materials.
On August 18, the materials of the criminal case were transferred to the prosecutor's office to initiate criminal prosecution.
Police urge victims not to remain silent
The State Police note that sexual crimes belong to a particularly sensitive category. Practice shows that victims often decide to speak about their experiences only many years later.
Therefore, the police urge individuals with information about possible similar crimes to report it to law enforcement agencies.
The investigation covers events over a period of more than 20 years and 18 alleged episodes involving five minors. The materials are now with the prosecutor's office, which must make further procedural decisions.
The State Police emphasizes that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the law.
