A large-scale operation to search for a man suspected of killing three people at a shooting club in Danilovgrad has concluded in Montenegro. According to the police, the Russian was found in a forest near the resort of Herceg Novi, where he took his own life after a shootout. The country has declared a two-day mourning period.
As previously reported by bb.lv, the tragedy occurred on Monday at a shooting club in Danilovgrad. According to the investigation, a citizen of Russia, who frequently visited this shooting range, opened fire and killed three men — citizens of Montenegro.
After that, the suspect took the weapon and ammunition and fled in the car of one of the deceased. The owner of the shooting club managed to escape — at the time of the attack, he was sleeping in one of the rooms.
The Car Was Found 100 Kilometers Away
The police launched a large-scale operation to search for the suspect. The vehicle was found abandoned near the resort town of Herceg Novi, about 100 kilometers from the crime scene.
Residents of the area were warned of the danger, urged not to leave their homes, and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
On Tuesday night, special forces found the wanted man in a forest near the resort and surrounded him. According to the police, the suspect opened fire and then took his own life.
The Motive for the Murder Is Still Unknown
The media identifies the suspect as 30-year-old Mikhail Shabunin, a native of Perm. The police in Montenegro stated that he had not previously come to the attention of local law enforcement.
The motives for the triple murder remain unknown.
It is also reported that the man arrived in Montenegro by bus on July 7. In the following days, he repeatedly crossed the state border: in six days, he left Montenegro by bus eight times and then returned.
The Country Has Declared Mourning
For small Montenegro, this incident has become one of the most high-profile crimes in recent years.
In memory of the victims, September 1 and 2 have been declared days of mourning. In Danilovgrad, the start of the new school year has been postponed until the mourning period is over.
