In the Riga neighborhood of Imanta, two teenagers stole an expensive bicycle left near a residential building. Thanks to the surveillance camera footage, a social media post, and the attentiveness of local residents, the bicycle was found.
On Monday morning, Sarmis took a bicycle from his friend and went to visit. Around eight in the evening, he left it near house No. 5 on Mazas Krumu Street and went up to his apartment, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).
Two hours later, the man discovered that the bicycle was missing.
"Two hours later, when I went outside, I found that the bicycle was already gone — it had been stolen. I tried to find it, hoping that someone had just moved it to another place," Sarmis said.
The theft was reported to the police. The next day, it turned out that a surveillance camera installed in the first-floor window captured the moment of the crime.
According to Sarmis, two teenagers about 14 years old were involved in the theft.
"They just came up, took it, and left, only looking back once," he said.
A few days later, the owner received a call from a security guard at a nearby sports center in Imanta. He recognized the bicycle from a social media post and reported that the teenagers had abandoned it near the skate park the day before.
The bicycle was returned, but it was not without damage.
"There is damage. The bicycle is assembled, but the brakes are damaged. I think they had a good fall on it," Sarmis said.
According to him, he is now deciding what to do about the teenagers involved in the theft.
Bicycle owners are reminded by experts that vehicles should always be locked to stationary objects and registered in the CSDD database. This significantly increases the chances of recovering a bicycle in case of theft.
