In the Adazi region, rescuers retrieved the body of a deceased person from the Vejupe River. This incident added to the sad statistics of the current swimming season, during which 31 deceased individuals have already been found in Latvian waters.
On Wednesday, employees of the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) retrieved the body of a deceased person from the Vejupe River in the Adazi region. The body was then handed over to the State Police.
According to the SFRS, since the start of the swimming season, which began on May 15, 31 bodies have already been found in the waters of Latvia.
In total, since the beginning of 2026, rescuers have retrieved 51 deceased individuals from the water.
For comparison, throughout last year, 108 bodies were found in Latvian waters, of which 45 drowned during the swimming season.
The swimming season traditionally remains a time when the number of such tragedies significantly increases. Therefore, rescuers regularly remind people of the need to exercise caution near water and not to overestimate their abilities while swimming.
Over the past 24 hours, the State Fire and Rescue Service received 45 calls. Of these, 13 were related to firefighting, 21 to rescue operations, and another 11 were false alarms.
Statistics show that the summer period remains one of the busiest for rescue services, and the number of tragic incidents on the water continues to rise.
