The Kurzeme District Court will continue the hearing of the high-profile criminal case of a particularly brutal murder of a woman committed during a robbery. All three defendants were previously sentenced to life imprisonment but have appealed this verdict.
Today at 14:00, the Kurzeme District Court will continue the hearing of the appeal in one of the most brutal criminal cases in recent years in Latvia.
The case involves Alina Romanenkova, Pavel Shaltis, and Evgeny Bogdan. According to the prosecution, they acted as a group and brutally murdered a woman during a robbery.
Previously, the Latgale District Court found all three guilty and sentenced each to life imprisonment. The case is now under review by the appellate court.
According to the prosecution materials, the torture of the victim lasted for at least seven hours with short breaks. The investigation believes that during this time, the accused inflicted no less than 60 traumatic blows and other violent actions on the woman, who was in a helpless state.
The woman died from the bodily injuries and suffering inflicted upon her.
In addition to the charge of particularly brutal murder, the defendants are also accused of the illegal use of the deceased's payment means.
If the appellate court does not change the decision of the first instance, the life sentences will remain in force. This is why the current consideration of the case is crucial for the final verdict.
The first instance court also ordered the defendants to pay nearly 50,000 euros as compensation for material damages, funeral expenses, and moral harm to the relatives of the deceased. Furthermore, they are required to reimburse the state for the compensation paid to the victims and procedural costs.
During the court debates, the state prosecutor also insisted on imposing life imprisonment on all three, considering it the only proportionate punishment for the committed crimes.
