An attack occurred at a gymnasium in the German federal state of Bavaria, resulting in serious injuries to two 13-year-old schoolgirls. According to police, the suspect — a 16-year-old teenager — was detained at the scene.
The incident occurred at the Welfen-Gymnasium in the town of Schongau, near the border with Austria. According to the DPA agency, citing police representatives, the injured girls sustained serious injuries, but their lives are not currently in danger, reports NOS.
Preliminary information indicates that the attacker was armed with a knife and a firearm. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the teenager managed to fire one shot but did not injure anyone — after that, the weapon misfired. He then pulled out knives and attacked the schoolgirls.
Teachers and arriving police officers quickly subdued the suspect and detained him. The motive for the attack is currently unknown. The investigation believes that the teenager acted alone.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann reported that the suspect had previously undergone psychiatric treatment. Additionally, there are grounds to believe that he is a former student of this school, although this information has not yet been officially confirmed.
According to the minister, both injured girls sustained stab wounds and are presumed to have been random victims.
The investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement agencies are determining the motives for the attack and are also examining the circumstances under which the teenager was able to bring a knife and a firearm into the school. For now, the investigation assumes that the attack was not part of a broader conspiracy and that the suspect acted independently.
